David George is a South African cyclist. He cycled on the USPS team 1999-2000, and later for Barloworld. David George started his second year as a professional and as a member of the U.S. Postal Service team with valuable race experience gained last season. Racing primarily as a domestique, George fought through his rookie season, pushing past his problem with a recurring knee injury, with promise for a strong future, especially in his skill set, the time trial. At the beginning of the season, George assisted teammate Christian Vande Velde in his victory at the Redlands Classic in the U.S. and then returned to his home country of South Africa to finish second overall at the Giro del Capo. The second place effort was his best performance at the event after finishing ninth in 1997 and fifth in 1998. Later in the season, George finished just out of the top 30 at the Tour of Burgos in Spain. In the amateur ranks, George finished in the top four on two separate occasions in the Under-23 time trial at the World Championships, placing third in 1997 and fourth in 1998. Also in 1998, George won a stage and placed eighth overall at the Commonwealth Bank Classic in Australia and 21st overall at the PruTour in Great Britain.
