Throughout his career, Steve Mariucci, as a coach and college football standout, has played an integral role in building winners. Mariucci has a penchant for transforming struggling teams into programs of success Most recently he was the coach for the Detroit Lions. In previous roles, Mariucci proved his leadership as a coach by navigating the 49ers' organization through salary-cap related struggles and returning it to winning form. He took the University of California to a bowl game, and, as a player, by commanding Northern Michigan University from a winless college football program to a national championship as a standout quarterback. Mariucci's NFL head coaching career was launched in 1997 when he took over the San Francisco 49ers. His rookie season was among the best all-time. His squad finished with a 13-3 record. In 1988, Mariucci was honored by the university that he led to greatness in the mid-1970s when he was inducted into the Northern Michigan University Hall of Fame. Seven years later, he was a 1995 inductee into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Hall of Fame. Born November 4, 1955, the Iron Mountain native and his wife, Gayle, have four children: sons, Tyler, Adam and Stephen, and daughter, Brielle. He coached for the San Francisco 49ers and most recently for the Detroit Lions.
