Troy Aikman was one of the most dominant professional football players in the United States during the 1990s, leading the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl championships. After playing for the University of California at Los Angeles, Aikman was drafted by the Cowboys in 1989, a starter in his rookie season. By 1992 he was named the Most Valuable Player in his first Super Bowl victory (Super Bowl XXVII). Aikman sustained 10 concussions and several injuries in his career, forcing him to retire in 2001. He then joined FOX television as a commentator. He made an invaluable contribution to his team, the Dallas Cowboys, and was given the honor of entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. After going 3-13 during the 1988 season, the Cowboys figured things couldn’t get any worse and they decided to start the rookie quarterback in 1989. That team went a dreadful 1-15 and Aikman was winless in his 11 starts. Labeled as a bust, Troy Aikman quickly proved his critics wrong as he led America’s Team to the playoffs in 1991 and later to three Super Bowl titles. Known as one of “The Triplets” along with running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin. Aikman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and is also a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor. Aikman retired from football in 2000 and then joined Fox’s NFL telecasts as a color commentator for the 2001 season and within a few years received an Emmy Award nomination for his work. Troy Aikman can certainly speak about being a winner, both on the football field and in life. After a rough start to his career in the NFL, he could have easily packed it in and given up, but he persevered and became one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the league.
