Robby Gordon is another driver who is looking for a season of redemption in 2001 and he might find it with Morgan-McClure Racing -- a former powerhouse in terms of superspeedway victories -- and crew chief David Ifft. Gordon, who has had a couple stand-in roles in Winston Cup before an abortive experiment with owner Felix Sabates in 1997, returned to Winston Cup in 2000 driving for a team he owned along with Mike Held and John Menard. Gordon drove in 17 races and matched his career best Winston Cup finish with a fourth at Watkins Glen. He finished ninth in the season's other road course race at Sears Point and his best oval track finish was 13th at Las Vegas. His best start in a season interrupted by low finances and spotty sponsorship was 11th at Sears Point. Gordon is perhaps one of the most versatile racers in the world, finding success behind the wheel of a variety of vehicles. Gordon has competed in both CART and the IRL, stock cars, road racing machines and even off-road racers such as the Trophy Truck he drove in this year's Baja 2000. One of Gordon's best moments came when he led 33 laps near the end of the 1999 Indianapolis 500, running out of fuel and giving up the lead on the final lap to finish fourth. He ran the Indy 500 while competing with Sabates in Winston Cup in 1997.
